This week Victoria and Sam embarked on creating the planet 'Stockbrook' Some thorough research of Google Earth raised some interesting facts about the Stockbrook area of Derby. There was felt to be very little in terms of the visual arts in the area however there are a number of dedicated spaces for graffiti, like in Stockbrook Park. Sam and Victoria felt that there are a number of activities for young people in the area including Kickboxing at the 'Dragons Academy Martial Arts Centre' The Dragon Academy logo features on the planet. Sam felt if she could remove one thing from the area it would be the Chip Shop as she felt it smelt and caused a huge litter problem in the area. Sam and Victoria identified that there are some significant colours in the area. Grey and Green represent the mix of rural and built up areas. Also orange is a colour that features highly in shops such as the Sainsburys, Gerrard's Fish and Chip Shop and in the local football teams kit. Sam and Victoria are hoping that other friends from the area will join them in completing the planet at a later date. Watch this Space!!

Prototype 2
Today we tried a different approach to making the planet. We used newspaper cuttings of words to add personality to the planet. As with planet 1 we added a layer of different coloured tissue paper. It will create a 'stained glass' window effect when lit from the inside. This technique could be used in yellow and orange on a bigger scale to create the Sun, which will be central to our 'solar system'.

Prototype 1
Our first prototype was a lampshade made out of tissue paper and wire, 40cm in diameter. Then we had a selection of different coloured tissue papers which we cut into random shapes and glued them to the globe. This created a colourful effect when light passed through it. We could have made it more clear what area the planet was representing. We are still experimenting with different materials to find the perfect solution.

The Quadmos Needs You!
Many years from now, great astronomers predict that Derby will have it's own solar system. We will now use the greatest advancements of technology to simulate this great prediction.
At the moment this solar system is very bare and uninhabited. It needs YOUR help to creating the bustling universe.
WATCH THIS SPACE for details of how to get involved
